Always be Learning

Never think you know enough--there is always something new to learn. People have been knitting for centuries upon centuries, yet I still find "new" techniques. One of my favorite knitters, the late Elizabeth Zimmerman, called her knitting epiphanies "unventing" rather than inventing. When she found a new way of doing things, she assumed others had also seen it--it was just waiting there for her to ...

Sometimes a job is a real joy.  Right now I have my annual box of handspun yarn from a nice lady who has sheep of various colors.  Each hank of undyed yarn has a tag with the name of the sheep , and I knit 4x4 sample squares form each, then send them back to her.I feel as if I know her sheep--even have my favorites, including the one with the darkest chocolate-colored wool. These fun jobs...
Multiply Yourself

As a mother of six, there were times when the children were all young that I felt I needed 2 or 3 of me just to keep up.  Even now, with almost all of them grown, I tend to get myself into projects that are too big.Example: I love to knit and sew. I'm really fast, too. But I have to be careful about saying "yes" to projects for profit.  No matter how fast I am, I will never be able to cr...
Your Handmade Business?

Think carefully about selling handmade items as a business.  Too many people undervalue their time.  Think about the hourly wage you want to make--after expenses for supplies, equipment, and advertising.  The general public will want to buy your items for almost nothing--but you can't sell them for nothing!  Here are some tips for beginners:1. Find a few items--or just one--you...
